India is expected to overtake Germany to become the world’s third most powerful travel and tourism market by 2032, according to World Travel and Tourism Council’s Economic Impact Research.

Our guess is it might happen sooner. In our recent Megatrends report we highlighted how India is set to be the new China in the reordering of travel in Asia.

And then there is the recent United Nations population report projecting that India, with more than 1.4 billion population, is projected to surpass China as the world’s most-populous nation sometime in April this year.

For naysayers, there’s the record order of 470 aircraft that Air India has placed with Boeing and Airbus, which many say will be a “gamechanger.”

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say all these factors carry huge implications for travel coming to and from India. We, at Skift are mindful of this and want to make sure that we are there to report it when that shift happens.
